DIY Fiberglass drift boat. Messages 2 Reaction score 0. Hello, Has anyone on here build a fiberglass drift boat from scratch? If so I would like to pick some brains. Thanks, Andrew. Unless you have access to a 'mold' to lay the glass don't even think about the 'try. I have watched cedar strip canoes being built, which also have a fiberglass finish to give them strength. As Fred said, the mold is critical.
There are plans available to build a drift boat. As far as an all glass hull, Fred is right. It will be difficult without a mold. Messages 5, Reaction score 73 Location Gone, gone. Andrew Sounds like a fun project. I agree with the others, you will need a mold, but here is a group of college students that took on a DIY fiberglass Diy Fly Fishing Boat License drift boat project using an old beater boat they found.
Last edited: Nov 5, Diy Fly Fishing Boat License Hey guys! Thanks for the replies. I'm giving a timeline of 2 years for this project. I have done a lot of research. Going to build a frame to make a mold then build the boat off that. I'm more interested in wat fiberglass techniques to use as well as resin. Do you Boat Fishing Fly License Diy Diy Fly Fishing Boat License have to do all the glass at once? For example, if I stop can I start again? What thickness does the glass need to be?
Questions like that. Much appreciated. Aren't there some plans using the moldless techniques? Burt Rutan started this in the 70's for homebuilt airplanes, I can't believe nobody's done this for boats. One of the strength tests is to whack it License Boat Fly Fishing Diy Diy Fly Fishing Boat License Diy Fly Fishing Boat License with a hammer; and airplane types, Burt in particular, are nutjobs for lightness.
Seems a natural match to me. I'll admit I'm too lazy to search myself. Polyester resin is what is commonly used. The usual process to build fiberglass parts is to build a plug shaped like your part then a mold is made off the plug.
The part is then made off the mold. A mold Diy Fly Fishing Boat License can also be "splashed" where a existing part is used as a plug and the mold is a copy of the existing part. Fiber glass work is not terribly complicated but is a art to make it come out looking good.
Id start with a smaller project than a boat. JoJer Well-known member. Messages 2, Reaction score Location Boise, Idaho. I sorta looked at boat building kit and scratch plans years ago. When I lived in Washington Diy Fly Fishing Boat License State I thought about building a powered river boat using fiberglass batts. They were Diy Fly Fishing Boat License Diy Fly Fishing Boat License several feet long and maybe 6" wide. They worked just like wood but were more flexable.
You made a wooden frame and then covered it with the batts screwing them to the frame. It looked like a great way for a home builder to go but I never got to it.
Now that I think Diy Fly Fishing Boat License about it the product was a foam core product. Some came in scored sheets so it would mold to contours. I think it was West Systems that had License Fly Boat Fishing Diy it in Washington. Last edited: Nov 6, JoJer said:. It had the frame then Diy Fly Fishing Boat License you used thin strips of wood on the sides. The outer skin was canvas that you covered with resin. Some years later after some abuse bow and arrow we decided to cover it with glass. That proved to be very miserable. Everyone including the neighbor had fiber glass in their cloths itch itch itch. Has anyone on here build a fiberglass drift boat from Diy Fly Fishing Boat License scratch? There is a very good reason no DIY-er builds an all-fiberglass boat from scratch. Generally this type of construction is suited only to production boat building.Fly Boat Fishing License Diy

It simply isn't practical to produce 1 boat this way. There are unique systems, like C-Flex, which allow one to build a glass boat over a temporary wooden frame. But, for an individual to build 1 boat, it is vastly more practical to build in wood and then glass over.
Take a look at stitch-and-glue construction. This is a very fast system designed for less skilled woodworkers. And well suited to building a drift boat. I Diy Fly Fishing Boat License Diy Fly Fishing Boat License am a professional boat builder who specializes in customizing yachts.
